Upon request each teacher shall be allowed compassionate leave without loss of salary in the case of death or serious illness of:
- Father, mother, son, daughter, spouse or common-law spouse up to five days;
- Sister, brother up to four days;
- Mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, grandparent-in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law up to three days;
- Upon request, each teacher shall be allowed compassionate leave without loss of salary up to one day to attend a funeral of an aunt, uncle, niece or nephew; or to attend a funeral as a pallbearer or eulogist.
- Leave beyond this amount on compassionate grounds may be granted at the discretion of the Superintendent;
- For the purpose of this article, common-law spouse shall be defined as follows:
where an employee establishes that he or she has been residing with a person and has been publicly representing that person as his or her spouse for a period of not less than one (1) year, that person shall be deemed to be the common-law spouse of the employee.
- Upon request, a teacher may be granted up to two (2) days of leave at no loss of salary for travel purposes when the funeral that they are attending is scheduled to occur a distance further than 600 kilometers from their place of residence.
